In the Middle Ages often the beholder would own all 12 stones set in various jewellery and would wear one a month. It has become custom over the years to only possess the stone which lands on your birthday.
A variety of stones are connected to each month and differ between cultures. An official list of birthstones by month including colour and meaning was therefore created by The National Association of Jewellers in 1952 and is updated from time to time. The latest addition was tanzanite in 2002.
January : GarnetGarnets are a brilliant Bohemian dark red colour and are associated with properties and attributes such as faith, love and courage. February: AmethystAmethysts are a beautiful stone found in a remarkable purple colour. It symbolises peace, protection and tranquility. Amethyst has long been prized as an amulet and was used in ancient civilisations. Its most common application was to prevent drunkenness. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word Amethystos, meaning non-intoxicating. They are found in Brazil, Uruguay and South Korea.
March: AquamarineAquamarines are a clear sea-blue colour, they are charming and calm gemstones. Associated with meanings like creativity, hope, self-expression and courage, Aquamarines Increase overall happiness for the wearer. They may be found in Brazil, Nigeria, Zambia and Madagascar.
April: DiamondSparkling white diamonds as most of us already know are connected with eternal love. April’s birthstone also symbolizes romance and courage and is known to ward off insanity. This stone was discovered in India about 2500 years ago where the inhabitants called them splinters from the stars. The top five producing countries are Russia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Australia and Canada.
May: EmeraldBeautiful deep green Emeralds are the birthstone of May. A stone of inspiration and infinite patience, it embodies unity, compassion and unconditional love. Emerald promotes friendship, balance between partners, and is particularly known for providing domestic bliss, contentment and loyalty. Emerald is also a stone of great vision and intuition, associated with the eyes and sight, long believed to foretell future events and reveal one’s truths. Emeralds are found all over the world, including Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zambia.
June: AlexandritThis rare gemstone was discovered in Russia in 1834 and uniquely changes colour from red to green dependant on the light. Often described as ‘ruby by day, emerald by night’. Alexandrite is believed to improve intuition, imagination, creative powers, and psychic abilities. It brings peace, calm, and harmonious emotional states to the wearer. Today most Alexandrite comes from Sri Lanka, Brazil and East Africa as the Russian resources have dwindled however the colour pales in comparison to the vivid Russian gemstones.
July: RubyRuby is a vivid fiery red, associated with power, passion and protection. Rubies adorned kings, head of warrior tribes and political rulers as it was believed to enhance their leadership skills and power of decision making. Promoting courage and bringing success in wealth and love. The finest rubies come from Burma. Large quantities are also found in Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania and India.
August: PeridotPeridot’s have a bright and fresh green/yellow colour tone that helps to heal stress and reduces anger. In olden days, people wore this stone to ward off evil, negativity and black magic. This stone is formed from volcanic action and should be a lime green colour. They are found in Hawaii, Burma and China.
September: SapphireThe Sapphire is a rich deep blue precious gem symbolic of purity, wisdom, faith, loyalty and serenity. This stone is said to focus the mind, encourage self -discipline and channel higher powers. Due to its durability combined with its beauty, this stone is a perfect alternative for engagement rings. October : TourmalineTourmaline comes in a variety of colours but most popular in pink or green hues. November : CitrineA golden yellow Citrine is called the ‘stone of the mind’ as it can help with intellect and clarity. Known to help mind and body protecting the wearer from negative people and eliminating self-destructive tendencies. Brazil is the largest supplier of citrine, other sorces include Spain, Bolivia, France, Russia and the U.S.
December : TanzaniteTanzanite is a highly attractive deep blue colour with unique violet hues that enchant the wearer. Viewed from different directions this colour shifting gem has been said to facilitate raising consciousness. Named for it’s limited geographic origin Tanzanite is still only found on a few square miles of land in Tanzania, near majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and has quickly risen to popularity since its discovery in 1967.
